Marek's Disease in Chickens | Melbourne Chicken Vet

Marek’s disease is a highly contagious viral illness that affects chickens. Caused by Marek’s Disease Virus (MDV), this condition can lead to tumours, paralysis, immune suppression, and death. There is currently no cure, which is why Bird Vet Melbourne strongly recommends vaccinating chicks before any exposure to the virus.

🦠 What Causes Marek’s Disease?

Marek’s disease is caused by a chicken-specific herpesvirus. It spreads rapidly in flocks, especially in close quarters or where hygiene is poor.

💨 How the Virus Spreads

The virus is shed in feather dust, skin dander, and droppings. Once introduced to an environment, it can persist for long periods. Birds exposed to the virus may not show symptoms for weeks or months.

⚠️ Symptoms of Marek’s Disease

  • Paralysis of one or both legs, wings, or neck
  • Weight loss and lethargy
  • Tumours in the liver, spleen, or kidneys
  • Blindness (ocular Marek’s)
  • Skin lumps around feather follicles (cutaneous Marek’s)
  • Sudden death, especially in young chickens

Once the virus is present in a flock, control is difficult without vaccination.

🛡️ Prevention: Vaccination is Critical

The Marek’s vaccine is the most effective way to protect chickens. It should be administered within the first 24 hours after hatching and before any potential virus exposure. Vaccination helps reduce the severity and spread of the disease but does not eliminate the virus entirely.

🧬 Breeding for Resistance

Certain chicken breeds are naturally more resistant to Marek’s disease. While vaccination is still recommended, selecting birds from resistant lines can offer some additional protection. Note that even resistant birds can become carriers and spread the virus to others.

📌 Important Facts About Marek’s

  • Marek’s disease does not affect humans or other animals
  • Meat and eggs from infected chickens are safe to eat
  • There is no treatment once a bird is infected
  • Stress can trigger outbreaks in previously exposed or vaccinated birds

👨‍⚕️ When to Contact a Poultry Vet

If you notice symptoms such as paralysis, weakness, or rapid weight loss in your chickens, contact Bird Vet Melbourne as soon as possible. Prompt veterinary advice can help reduce losses and limit disease spread.

🧪 Diagnosing Marek’s Disease

A clinical exam may suggest Marek’s, but confirmation usually requires post-mortem testing. This includes laboratory analysis of organs like the liver, spleen, and sciatic nerve to detect Marek’s-related tumours.
