Expert pigeon vet care for canker, trichomoniasis, crop disease and pigeon medications.
Canker, also called trichomoniasis, is one of the most common diseases seen in pigeons. It is caused by Trichomonas gallinae and commonly affects the mouth, throat and crop.
At Bird Vet Melbourne our avian vets regularly treat racing pigeons, backyard pigeons, rescue pigeons and fancy pigeons.
The best treatment depends on whether you are treating one sick pigeon, a racing loft, or a group outbreak. The strain of pigeon trichomonas also plays a role, and the severity of the disease. Treatment protocols are different for preventative canker treatments in pigeons.
One of the best canker treatments. It's a combination of two antiprotozoal treatments used for more difficult or resistant canker cases.
Used in veterinary treatment plans for trichomoniasis in individual birds.
Great treatment option individual pigeons.
Used for loft-wide treatment when multiple pigeons may be affected.
Common racing pigeon method: ¼ tablet once daily. A practical field method, but not as accurate as veterinary weight-based dosing. IS much higher than the recommended dose.
Approx. 25 mg/kg once or twice daily for 5 days. Useful for individual sick pigeons where accurate dosing is needed.
Ideally before problems arise , and get appropriate preventative medications to avoid serious disease and death. Please seek veterinary care if your pigeon has plaques, difficulty breathing, severe weight loss, weakness, regurgitation, crop problems, or is not eating or drinking.

Many pigeon medications are prescription-only and should be used under veterinary guidance. The correct treatment depends on the pigeon's weight, condition, hydration, crop function and severity of infection.
